William Perry teacher describes JMU-athlete mentorship program, students cite confidence gains

Adrienne Paulson, reading specialist at William Perry Elementary, told the board that visits and recurring mentorship by James Madison University student‑athletes have strengthened student engagement and confidence at the school. Paulson described classroom STEM activities, lunchtime conversations and informal mentoring: "They said, 'this is the best school we've ever been to' and one student said, 'I love this school. These kids look like me,'" Paulson said, describing feedback from athletes and students.
One student who spoke during the presentation said the experience inspired him toward teaching and that ongoing contact created a trusting relationship. Another student volunteer said the opportunity helped him become a better mentor at home and suggested transportation support would make continuing the program easier.
Board members thanked Paulson and the students, and Dr. Castle confirmed the administration will continue to support community partnerships and look for logistical solutions such as transportation when possible. The presentation included photos and in‑person remarks from current and former student‑athlete mentors who described activities ranging from STEM challenges to attending spring training events with students.
