At the June 9 work session the Aberdeen Town Board agreed to accept the Garden Park property from the Friends of the Aberdeen Library once construction is complete.
Assistant Manager Phillip Richardson described the request from the Friends. Mayor Robert A. Farrell told the board the Friends plan to place a fountain on the site and cautioned that, "if it quits working then the Town will be responsible for it if the Town accepts it." Richardson said the planned fountain is "small," and said the gazebo will be built by SCC students based on a design by Landscape Planner Mike Gleason and paid for by the Friends.
Town Manager Paul Sabiston told the board the town would not be obligated to replace the fountain if it failed and reported the board was "in agreement to accept the property once it is ready for acceptance." Sabiston directed Assistant Manager Richardson to notify the Friends that the Town will accept the property "with no conditions." No formal recorded vote appears in the minutes for acceptance; the action was recorded as board agreement and staff direction.
The acceptance places responsibility for long-term maintenance on the town once the board formally accepts the property and completes any required transfer paperwork.
