Mayor Pro-tem Bryan Bowles moved to schedule the hearing and Helms seconded; the motion carried unanimously, 5-0.
The hearing will give the public and property owners an opportunity to comment on proposed changes that, as described by staff, include enhanced design standards and adjustments to allowable uses in affected zoning and overlay areas. The board did not take final action on the amendment at the work session; staff will return with the public hearing record and recommendations after the June 23 meeting.
Planning staff identified NC Highway 5 as the recommended starting area for reinstating the Overlay District, but the board deferred any adoption decision to the public hearing and subsequent agenda. The board did not specify an implementation timeline at the work session.
