Aberdeen approves road closures for Winter Runderland 5K; library construction update given

The Town of Aberdeen on June 23 approved an ordinance declaring temporary road closures for Dec. 13, 2025, to permit the Winter Runderland 5K and the town’s holiday parade.
Megan McDonald (speaker 10), who identified herself as an event organizer and former event coordinator in Pinehurst, described the course and coordination with police, fire and recreation staff. McDonald said the route would close Poplar Street, Peach Avenue, Sycamore Street, Maple Street, Bethesda Avenue, Petey Road, NC 211, East Main Street and West Main Street for the race and parade; the only extended closure would be West Main from Poplar to Sycamore during the parade. She said organizers had met with police, fire and recreation staff and planned a satellite parking and shuttle arrangement to avoid parking conflicts.
"We felt there was a beloved event in the community," McDonald said, explaining that the organizers want to revive the winter 5K while pairing it with the parade. After questions about parade timing and parking, the board moved and adopted the ordinance authorizing the temporary closures by voice vote.
In other business, a participant (speaker 8) displayed historical photos of a past train derailment and recounted memories of that event. Commissioners also noted visible progress at the Sand Mines/Pinehurst Number 10 development.
The board received a construction update on the new downtown library: interior doors are in, flooring panels are on order and custom front and rear doors are still pending, which could delay final exterior work; staff expect the project to reach completion by late summer or early fall but cautioned timing depends on outstanding material deliveries and inspections. Board members discussed the staffing model and ongoing county funding conversations for library operations.
The ordinance for road closures was adopted by motion and voice vote; staff will coordinate the closures with NCDOT, the railroad when applicable, and public-safety agencies.
What’s next: event organizers will finalize permits and parking/shuttle arrangements with town departments; staff will continue library closeout work and report back to the board on transfer/operational details and funding.
