Consultant: Aberdeen has capacity now but must pursue wells, pipeline and treatment to meet growth

Consultants and town staff presented a water and sewer capacity update Dec. 8, outlining current production, zone constraints, and recommended capital priorities.
Brandon Levis of LKC said the town’s existing supply wells produce about 2,000,000 gallons per day while average customer consumption (excluding county purchases) is about 1,100,000 gallons per day. But he cautioned that the town’s system is divided into pressure zones with limits on how much water can be passed between them, and that those hydraulic constraints mean some parts of town cannot readily draw on the surplus in other zones without upgrades.
“Right now the town produces approximately 2,000,000 gallons a day of water through the existing water supply wells, and the town has an average consumption of approximately 1,100,000 gallons a day,” Brandon Levis said.
The presentation documented that Moore County’s use of the interconnection is variable: over a recent 2½‑year period, there were many days the county did not use the connection, but on the days they did use it, they exceeded their contracted allocation (600,000 gallons per day) about 65 percent of the time; on 10 days Moore County’s use exceeded half of the town’s 12‑hour well yield capacity.
Staff and consultants also described site‑specific issues: the town has lost at least two wells in Zone 5 (Keizer Street and Sandy Springs area) because of contamination; the team identified candidate locations for new wells (including sites in Zone 3) and discussed possible treatment or remediation options for contaminated wells. Consultants repeatedly recommended drilling and testing potential well sites and completing the Bethesda Road line and other CIP projects to move water effectively between zones.
Commissioners and staff discussed tradeoffs. One commissioner said the report did not show the sky was falling but recommended frequent follow‑up and early budgeting for wells, treatment and pipeline upgrades. Staff said additional mapping, monitoring‑station validation and a more complete capital improvement plan will follow and be presented with draft budget figures.
What’s next: consultants and staff will continue the asset inventory and prepare CIP cost estimates and options for well drilling, treatment and hydraulic upgrades; the board asked for follow‑up briefings early in the new year.
