Commissioners review budget reserve goals, long-term projects and employee health-plan options

Commissioner Vermillion said she will work with staff to set reserve goals and department ceilings "so we start to have an idea of what we're working with." She said those discussions would inform budget planning over the next several months. County staff emphasized that the Thursday session was intended for this kind of fiscal and planning follow-up.
A county staff member reported that the county's health-care committee met with insurer Mako and that one proposal under consideration would lower spouse rates. The staff member said Mako had presented an alternate tier and would later present member-family options; "March 13 is the deadline for the commissioners to select those," the staff member said.
Beyond near-term budget items, staff and commissioners discussed coordinating department project updates tied to the eight long-term initiatives the county identified. Staff suggested appointing points of contact or assigning commissioners to liaise with department heads so project leads understand reporting expectations; MSU Extension staff offered help developing narratives and educational materials for the public and legislators.
Commissioners did not adopt final budget ceilings or select an insurance tier at the meeting; they agreed to continue work sessions and to gather quotes and additional information before making binding decisions.
