Sheriff warns Park County commissioners of rising overtime and jail medical bills

He attributed overtime spikes to major events, jury trials and training cycles and said some line items are miscoded. Vehicle repair costs for two vehicles were roughly $15,000 each and have driven maintenance budgets higher.
On detention expenses, the sheriff said the inmate medical and dental budget was $45,000 but that the county has spent roughly $57,190 so far, including two large emergency-room bills — $32,182 (for 19 inmates) and $10,261 — which together substantially raised medical costs. He said the county will review statutory requirements to determine which medical bills the county must pay and will coordinate with insurance and accounting to better code costs.
Sheriff staff proposed reconciling miscoded items, moving travel/training costs into more accurate lines, and reviewing grant reimbursements such as DUI task force funds split with the Livingston Police Department. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about staffing and whether recent departures or new hires were driving overtime; the sheriff said vacancies, training periods and certified transport duties all contribute.
Next steps: The sheriff will work with accounting to reclassify miscoded expenses, pursue grant reimbursements where appropriate, and schedule follow-up discussions on capital outlay and vehicle procurement.
