At the March 18 meeting the Duchesne County Library Board received a training-style briefing on labeling and rating systems and reviewed proposed Internet Policy updates.
Director Daniel Mauchley summarized the American Library Association’s guidance that labeling and rating systems can conflict with principles of intellectual freedom, and said the library will provide information on available rating systems without endorsing a specific system. He noted one exception: the library uses the Motion Picture Association (MPAA) ratings for movies.
The board also reviewed edits to the Internet Policy that add information about copyright laws and the pirating of physical and digital materials; the changes were presented as clarifications to policy language rather than new prohibitions. No formal vote on policy changes was recorded in the transcript.
Board members discussed the balance between giving patrons information and preserving intellectual freedom; no formal action was taken and staff were not directed to adopt a specific labeling system.
