Estero board approves Walmart repainting after board requests lighter rear color

The Village of Estero Planning, Zoning & Design Board on Feb. 20 approved a Walmart exterior repainting application, conditioning approval on a specific color substitution for part of the rear elevation.
Board members and staff said the store’s earlier iterations relied too heavily on dark brown and an overall “muddy” palette that did not highlight architectural articulation. Mary (staff) told the board the applicant returned with revised color chips and paint‑chip samples that staff considers more consistent with Estero’s land‑development standards.
During discussion board members focused on a long, linear rear wall visible to nearby residences and asked that the large wall section between the chips labeled “5” and “8” be changed to a lighter tan the group referred to as “sticks and stones.” The applicant’s representative (remote) agreed that the change could be made.
After that concession, a board member moved to approve the application subject to the rear‑elevation color change; a second was made and the motion passed on a roll call with the participating board members voting yes. Tammy performed the roll call as recorded at the meeting.
The approval is limited to the paint application as presented and conditioned; the board reminded speakers that quasi‑judicial testimony rules applied for the item and that written comments on the matter had been placed in the public record during the hearing.
The board’s action concludes the repainting application review for Estero; staff said the applicant will implement the agreed color substitution for the rear panel and update plans accordingly.
