Dorchester School District 4 highlights new playgrounds, admin renovations and approves instructional materials and student trips

Dorchester School District 4 trustees on March 19 heard a facilities and operations update describing recent renovations to the district administrative building, playground openings across multiple schools and plans for a transportation testing pad, and they approved instructional materials and two student trips.
Facilities director Martin described the renovated administrative space and noted that district electrician James Lowry wired lighting and installed fixtures throughout the building. "Every light fixture you see in here, he put in with his hands," Martin said, and the district expects a Dominion Energy rebate for the project. Martin also said playgrounds at Williams, Harleyville and Clay Hill are open, turf installation is pending, and several spring-break projects (including gym-bleacher demolition and replacement) are underway.
The director said the district is installing access controls at multiple campuses and is partnering with the state to convert the front-of-gym parking area into a testing pad to support transportation training; the state will handle painting and preparation at no cost to the district in exchange for shared use.
On curriculum, Trisha Delease, elementary coordinator, told trustees that K–12 math instructional materials—state-funded—were reviewed by each school and recommended for adoption. The board moved, seconded and approved the state-funded math-materials adoption.
Trustees also approved two out-of-state field trips: the Woodland High School band will travel to Carowinds on April 16 (approximately 90 students), and two Woodland FBLA students with two chaperones will attend the FBLA National Leadership Conference in Anaheim June 28–July 3. Both field trips were approved unanimously.
The superintendent said policies in Section K (community/home relations) were presented for a first reading and that the board will refine calendar details at a special-called meeting on April 10. The public portion of the meeting ended when the board voted to enter executive session for student hearings and personnel and legal matters.
