Highland Middle School Green Team and SSLAC student board members recognized; students raise PE uniform question

The Board of Education District No. 70 recognized Highland Middle School's Green Team and Highland Family Association volunteers Dec. 15 for creating and tending a courtyard and providing outdoor furniture.
Superintendent Rebecca Jenkins introduced student board members Jackson M. and Molly T., who described their roles in the Superintendent's Student Leadership Advisory Council (SSLAC). Jackson said he joined SSLAC to help improve the school, including cleaning up fields and hallways, and that he benefited from attending a downtown conference for student board members. Molly, an eighth-grader, said she enjoys leadership work and told the board SSLAC plans to investigate whether physical education uniforms are necessary; she said many students would prefer to wear everyday clothing in PE.
The board paused the meeting at 6:09 p.m. to meet the students and their families and reconvened at 6:18 p.m. The district presented multiple school highlights in the superintendent's report during the meeting, noting staff grants, awards, and school activities across Adler, Butterfield, Copeland Manor, Highland and Rockland schools.
