Kewanee CUSD 229 rejects rooftop HVAC bids, approves $482,988 ground-mounted system for high school

Kewanee Community Unit School District No. 229’s board of education on Aug. 4 unanimously rejected an initial plan to replace rooftop HVAC units at Kewanee High School and approved a larger, ground-mounted HVAC contract aimed at avoiding structural work on the auditorium.
Superintendent Baney recommended rejecting the first round of rooftop bids after telling the board the district’s plan to replace rooftop units would require steel reinforcement for the auditorium. "The current auditorium structure would be unable to support the new units and that steel beams would need to be installed," Baney said, and she told trustees that those installation issues made her hesitant to proceed with the rooftop option.
The board then considered a second set of bids for ground-mounted units. Baney said the ground-mounted approach "would solve the structural issues with the rooftop unit," though she noted it came in at a higher price. She described the proposal as placing the ground-mounted equipment outside the welding and industrial-arts classroom and running ductwork up to the roof.
Trustees moved and voted on both items. Member Dev moved to reject the first rooftop bids; Member DeBord seconded, and a roll-call vote recorded Members DeMay, Dev, DeBord, Christiansen, Salisbury and Steffen voting aye with Member Johnson absent, carrying the motion to reject. Later, Member Salisbury moved to approve the ground-mounted bid from Mechanical Service of Galesburg, Inc. for $482,988; Member Steffen seconded, and the same six members present voted to approve the contract.
Baney told the board the district expects the ground-mounted project to be completed by early December. The board had no public comments at the meeting and adjourned at 5:48 p.m.
The signed minutes provided with the record name JEFF JOHNSON, PRESIDENT, and JON DEBORD, SECRETARY; the meeting roll call, however, shows Member Johnson absent at the time of the vote.
