Superintendent reports FY26 funding, 1,931 students enrolled and construction updates

Superintendent R Baney updated the Kewanee CUSD 229 board on several operational items at the Aug. 18 meeting, summarizing funding, enrollment, construction activity and student programs.
Baney said the FY26 Evidence Based Funding allocations were released and the district remains a Tier 1 school; the district’s increase in funding is smaller than the prior year. She also said CPPRT (Corporate Personal Property Replacement Tax) funding will be slightly higher than last year.
On enrollment, Baney reported verified district enrollment of 1,931 students: Kewanee High School 581, Central 585, Irving 239, Belle 234, Neponset 131 and Lyle 161 (with 69 preschool openings still available). She said ROE‑run 21st Century after‑school programs will operate again at Belle, Irving and Central, with Belle and Irving already started and Central beginning soon.
On construction, Baney reported excavation for the tennis courts began and that concrete was poured and steel beams installed for the KHS biology room and lecture hall. She told the board that Hein Construction did not excavate to the planned 30‑inch depth; Baney said Hein will extend the slab warranty by one year and that fitness equipment installation is scheduled for Sept. 8.
Baney also told the board the district is considering moving from the Northwest Illinois School Food Co‑op into a merged cooperative with the LaSalle County Area Purchasing Cooperative and that the district’s fee would remain unchanged under that merger. All FOIA requests for the period had been fulfilled, she added.
The board did not take separate votes on these informational items at the meeting; personnel and policy items were handled later on the agenda.
