Students present district 'profile of a graduate'; board to consider resolution

Michelle Starnes of Johns Hopkins University and a student design team presented a district 'profile of a graduate' to the Grants‑Cibola County Schools board, describing student‑led research, prototypes and national presentations that staff said have placed the district's work on a national stage.
Starnes told the board the grant that supported the partnership ended in December but said students and staff want to continue the work. "The students have done all of it — the stakeholder engagement, the designing, the prototypes, the surveys," she said, noting the student team presented virtually to national foundations and in person to educators across the state.
Student presenters described the visual prototype for the profile and explained how elements such as respect, communication, critical thinking and leadership map to the district's goals. "Our profile of the graduate is based around an MRI image...because it is the perfect embodiment of what our core values are," a student presenter said.
Superintendent recommended staff pursue a formal resolution to endorse the students' findings; the board said it expects to see a resolution for consideration at a future meeting. Members thanked the students and district staff for the work and applauded the emphasis on student voice and stakeholder engagement.
The presentation will be followed by continued staff work on measuring milestone outcomes and by a forthcoming resolution the board can vote on. The board's next regular meeting is scheduled for March 24, when district leaders plan additional presentations, including updated graduation‑rate data.
