The Platteville School District board voted to authorize district staff to begin contracting repairs related to recent hail damage, approving work and expenditures not to exceed $1,100,000.
District staff told the board the initial damage estimate for roofs, HVAC units, cameras and other hail-impacted items is about $2,000,000; after anticipated insurance reimbursements and items the district will pay directly, staff estimated the district’s conservative share at roughly $1,100,000. The staff member described ongoing coordination with the district’s insurance agent and contractors and said some invoices remain to be finalized through the claims process.
The board’s action authorizes the business office to start executing repair contracts so work already underway (including material staging visible on the middle school roof) can proceed; the staff member said the greenhouse damage was included in the high school deductible while a nearby garage shed was handled as a separate structure subject to its own deductible (about $25,000).
A board member asked whether separate structures were covered together or separately; staff replied that coverage depends on whether buildings are treated as connected and that the garage was considered separate for the claim. The board moved and carried the motion to approve roof replacements, rooftop units and other hail-damage items for an amount not to exceed $1,100,000.
The decision allows the district to proceed with necessary repairs while some contractor and insurer settlements are finalized. The staff member emphasized that final amounts may change as contractors and insurers reconcile claims.
