Bill would let workplaces use e-filing and remote hearings for workplace-violence protective orders

Assemblymember Patel presented AB 2,179 to allow electronic filing and remote appearances for workplace-violence restraining orders, saying prior e-filing reforms for other protective orders increased access and certainty for petitioners.
Sharon Gonzales (City of Carlsbad) and organizations including the Family Violence Law Center, California Hospital Association and local district attorneys testified in support. They told the committee that adding WVROs to the electronic-filing framework would reduce logistical barriers for people seeking protection at work and allow witnesses to appear remotely.
Committee members voiced support and asked to be added as coauthors; the author asked for an "aye" vote and the committee moved the measure forward to the appropriate committee for further consideration of substantive and fiscal details.
