Commissioners report Mako conference takeaways and local concerns on livestock and cybersecurity

Commissioners used their update period on Feb. 10 to summarize takeaways from the Midwinter Mako conference and related meetings.

Commissioner Gordon, calling in from Washington where he attended NACO legislative events, said he would provide a fuller report on federal policy discussions after his return. The chair and other commissioners described sessions on precast concrete manufacturing (PCI-certified precast), including a nearby factory that is expanding production of pump-jack pads and concrete house walls. "It sounds like they've expanded quite a few times, and, pretty interesting to know that we have that in our backyard," the chair said.

The chair also relayed agriculture and public-safety topics from the conference, including a concern about the new-world screwworm affecting livestock; the chair said the pest attacks live tissue and was one reason border restrictions for cattle have been discussed. The commission noted no immediate local regulatory action in the record but flagged the issue as a conference takeaway.

Commissioners also described sessions on noxious-weed district training and county IT training about artificial intelligence and phishing risks; the chair said the county recently changed its email domain to m t dot gov to reduce phishing risk and urged diligence.

A resident raised a question about a recent Poplar building fire; commissioners described the building as a steel-frame structure whose insulation contributed to rapid fire spread and said the loss affected a longtime local business. The chair then moved the meeting to the official agenda items.
