KANE COUNTY, Utah — The Kane County Commission on March 10 unanimously appointed Cheryl Mattson to the Church Wells Special Service District Administrative Control Board and approved a plan to transfer most remaining containers from the old Care & Share property to Kanab City.
The appointment came after a public hearing with no public comment. Commissioner Patty Kubeja moved to approve Kane County Resolution No. R 2026-8 appointing Cheryl Mattson; the motion carried with Chair Gwen Brown, Commissioner Patty Kubeja and Commissioner Celeste Meyeres voting aye. The appointed term was recorded as beginning Jan. 1, 2024 and expiring Dec. 31, 2027.
Sheriff Tracy Glover told the commission the containers now sit on Kanab City property and that moving them would likely be cost-prohibitive for the county. Glover cited an insurance valuation of $51,000 and an assessor’s estimate of approximately $35,000 if the units were treated as private-residence property. The commission voted to retain the walk-in refrigerator and freezer to be auctioned at the sheriff’s convenience, transfer ownership of containers 2, 3, 5 and 6 to Kanab City, and keep container 7 for the 4‑H program if requested; if 4‑H declines, container 7 will be transferred to the city.
The motions on both the appointment and the container dispositions were made and carried during the regular session; each vote was unanimous among the three commissioners present. The meeting minutes record no amendments to the motions and no opposing comments from commissioners.
The actions close out outstanding county property-management questions tied to the former Care & Share site and formalize a board appointment for a special service district that will serve into 2027. The commission also approved routine consent items earlier in the meeting, including check edit reports for Feb. 25 ($281,826.14) and March 5 ($802,561.66), which were adopted by voice vote.
