Kewanee board picks Early Childhood Literacy and Numeracy as top strategic goal; updates on construction, dual credit and flu clinics

Superintendent R Baney presented draft strategic goals and asked the board to identify a top priority at the Oct. 20 meeting. After discussion, the board selected Goal #3: Early Childhood Literacy and Numeracy as the district's primary strategic focus going forward.
Mrs. Baney also updated the board on several operational items: Black Hawk College dual-credit enrollment increased 8.33% from the prior year, and KHS offers more dual-credit courses than neighboring districts. The district is partnering with the Henry Stark County Health Department to offer flu vaccines at individual buildings.
Construction updates included completion of roof projects with final payments included in the board packet, coordination needed to reinstall solar panels, electrical work underway for the KHS theater/science addition, fencing work at the tennis/fitness court site with the concrete pad nearly complete but surface coating postponed until spring due to temperature constraints, near-completion of the Central cafeteria HVAC project, and material delays affecting the KHS auditorium project.
Mrs. Tidwell, KHS principal, provided homecoming and fall sports updates, named Azucena Cabada and Jaime Radilla as Homecoming queen and king, and asked the board to consider adding Dual Credit Business Math to the College and Career Pathways; Superintendent Baney asked Mrs. Tidwell to submit the change for the November board meeting.
