Kewanee board adopts revised Policy 8:30, approves MOU with KEA and multiple personnel actions

The board unanimously approved revised Policy 8:30, ratified a memorandum of understanding with the Kewanee Education Association, and approved resignations, retirements, hires, transfers and volunteers as recommended from closed session.
At the Oct. 20 meeting, the Kewanee Community Unit School District No. 229 Board approved a set of personnel and governance items brought forward from closed session and the administration.
The board voted to adopt a revised Policy 8:30 after Superintendent R Baney recommended the update. Member Salisbury moved to adopt the revision; Member Dev seconded and the roll-call vote was unanimous among members present.
The board also approved resignations reported from closed session, including Rose McGee (Bus Aide, effective Sept. 29, 2025), David Souba (Substitute Bus Driver, effective Sept. 11, 2025), and Rebecca Johnson (Bus Aide, effective Oct. 31, 2025). The resignations were recommended by Mrs. Baney and approved by roll call.
Retirements approved included Kelly Ellerbrock (KHS science teacher, effective end of the 2028-2029 school year) and Loreen Jackson (district custodian, effective Dec. 25, 2025). The board approved hires for several positions, including Cody Butler as KHS athletic director for the 2026-27 school year, Janith Holmes as a part-time bus aide, and coaches and aides for extracurricular programs. The minutes note that all hires are contingent on candidates obtaining appropriate certification and qualifications.
The board also approved an internal transfer for Pedro Colombani to Custodian/Bus Driver and authorized volunteers for Ty Jones (KHS Robotics), Jacob Bartok (KHS Theater) and James Hunt (Central Jr. High & KHS Wrestling Coach). A proposed Golden Apple sabbatical leave for Kindra Callahan was tabled until legal technicalities under the Illinois School Code can be clarified; Mrs. Baney said there was no substantive issue with the request.
The board approved a Memorandum of Understanding with the Kewanee Education Association (KEA) after Superintendent R Baney recommended the agreement. Member Steffen moved to approve the MOU and Member Salisbury seconded; the roll call vote was unanimous among members present.
All motions recorded in the minutes carried by roll call votes with Members DeBord and Johnson noted absent.
