Kewanee CUSD 229 board approves resignations, hires and retirements; one abstention recorded

The Kewanee Community Unit School District No. 229 Board of Education on Nov. 17 approved multiple personnel actions that had been discussed in closed session and brought for formal action in open session.
Superintendent R. Baney recommended approval of personnel items that included the immediate resignation of Breanne Cinnamon as KHS head volleyball coach; the motion to approve that resignation passed on roll call with six members voting yes and Member Christiansen abstaining. The resignation was listed as effective immediately.
The board also approved the resignation of Alison Bejar (districtwide cafeteria substitute, effective Nov. 14, 2025) and accepted retirements announced for Melinda Blust (cafeteria worker, effective Dec. 31, 2025), Paula Evans (KHS academic advisor, effective end of 2025–26 school year) and Janis Boyk (bus driver, effective Dec. 19, 2025). All retirement and resignation motions other than the Cinnamon vote were adopted unanimously by roll call.
Hires approved included Emma Ellenberger (paraprofessional: Student Success Interventionist at Central), Mallory Park (KHS Scholastic Bowl coach), Laura Trenholm and Meryll Boyce (district cafeteria substitutes), Abby Carmichael (part-time KHS dishwasher) and several 21st Century program teachers and aides. The board noted all hires are contingent upon obtaining appropriate certification and qualifications prior to start.
The meeting record also shows approval of leaves (including a Golden Apple sabbatical and maternity leaves), the appointment of Kelsi Welgat as a long-term substitute for the spring semester, staff transfers, a slate of volunteers for KHS activities and the placement of student teacher Hannah Dries at Belle for an 80-day assignment beginning in January. All of those motions passed on roll call with no recorded no votes.
The board adjourned after completing the personnel roster updates; the meeting minutes record the formal votes in roll-call form for each action.
