Kewanee CUSD 229 board approves Golden Apple partnership, policy updates and $50,000 maintenance grant application

The Kewanee Community Unit School District No. 229 Board of Education on Nov. 17 approved several administrative items, including a partnership with the Golden Apple Foundation, a revised district policy and a grant application to replace flooring at Belle Alexander.

Superintendent R. Baney recommended the Golden Apple partnership, saying the program would help the district recruit for hard-to-fill positions and that the district would pay a placement fee only if it hired a Golden Apple scholar. The board approved the partnership by roll call; all members voted aye.

The board approved the revised Policy 4:102 on roll call. Board members also approved a request to allow Business Math to count as a math credit at Kewanee High School, enabling alternative course pathways to satisfy graduation requirements. The motions carried unanimously.

The board authorized applying for the School Maintenance Grant, described in meeting materials as a $50,000 state matching grant, to replace original flooring at Belle Alexander. Superintendent Baney said the grant requires a local match; the motion to approve the application was adopted on a unanimous roll-call vote.

Member Salisbury moved the promotion date and policy and grant motions where indicated; members voted by roll call. No dissenting votes were recorded on these items during open session.

The approvals are procedural actions that clear the way for staff to finalize agreements, pursue the state grant application and implement curriculum changes; specific implementation timelines and funding sources were not further detailed at the meeting.
