Councilmember Buie (Ward 1) withdrew a council resolution that had requested a comprehensive relocation, renovation and reopening plan for the Rondo Community Library, saying she was "very deeply disappointed in the lack of collaboration" on the proposal and concerned about negative impacts to a historically affected neighborhood.
Buie said staff had provided approximately 75% of requested material by Nov. 25 but that the process lacked adequate collaboration with Ward 1 residents and stakeholders. "Closing this Rondo Community Library is probably the last thing I, if I was mayor, would do," Buie said, adding that she did not support "nearly $1,000,000 of investments to go towards moving the bathrooms." She said she looked forward to further discussion with the library director and the library board in January.
Council President Naker acknowledged Buie's concerns and noted there was no motion for approval because the item had been withdrawn. Item 28 was recorded as withdrawn in the meeting minutes and will return to the council table for future consideration when additional information and collaboration occur.
