Sunrise honors teachers, student athletes and retiring staff; proclaims Women’s History Month and Hazel P. Rogers Day

The Sunrise City Commission used its March 10 meeting to recognize community members and city employees. Kevin Picard, director of leisure services, read nominations and the commission presented March’s Teacher of the Month award to Carol Ann Gutierrez of Sandpiper Elementary and honored student-athletes from Piper High School including London Yielder.
Mayor Michael J. Ryan led proclamations celebrating Women’s History Month and formally declared March 10, 2026 as Hazel P. Rogers Day, reading a summary of Rogers’s 30 years of public service and inviting the honoree to speak. The commission also recognized city retirees from the police, fire rescue, and utility billing functions, and presented an outstanding performance award to Ray Rajkumar of the utilities department for stepping into payroll and administrative roles during staffing transitions.
These recognitions were largely ceremonial and were followed by the meeting’s substantive business.
