Brookfield Board approves educator evaluation plan and field trips, tables unaffiliated pay increase

The Brookfield Board of Education on June 5 approved the district's Educator and Administrator Evaluation and Support Plan for the 2024-25 school year and cleared academic and sports field trips for next year, while tabling a proposed 3% salary increase for unaffiliated employees.
The actions began after a brief student representative report from Ava Cantone and recognitions of teachers and staff. Assistant Superintendent Dr. Anna Mahon gave an overview of the evaluation plan before the board voted 6-0 to approve it for submission to the Connecticut State Department of Education pursuant to state statute. The board also unanimously approved lists of field trips requested by Brookfield High School Principal Marc Balanda and sports trips requested by Athletic Director Steve Baldwin.
The board moved and approved several routine items by unanimous votes earlier in the meeting: approval of the May 22, 2024 minutes and the consent agenda. The Policy/Communications subcommittee reported that the district retained law firm Shipman & Goodwin and forwarded a bylaw and policy for board action.
A proposed 3% salary increase for unaffiliated employees was introduced by Stephanie Sikora (mover) with Rosa Fernandes seconding. After discussion, Joy Greenstein moved and Sarah Devine seconded to table the measure; the board voted 4-2 to table (Youngblood, Greenstein, Fischetto, Devine aye; Fernandes, Sikora no). The minutes record the tabling rather than adoption.
On old business the board voted 6-0 to adopt Bylaw #9324, Meeting Purpose and Parliamentary Procedures, on final reading as recommended by the policy subcommittee. A separate vote on Policy #6162.51, Survey of Students, ended in a 3-3 split (Greenstein, Fischetto, Devine aye; Youngblood, Fernandes, Sikora no); the minutes record the tally and note the earlier first reading on May 1, 2024, but do not record a successful adoption in this meeting.
