Commission outlines MOD grant priorities and proposes pilot for ATM accessibility

At the Feb. 10 meeting, the Bedford Disability Commission reviewed candidate projects for the FY27 Massachusetts Office on Disability (MOD) Municipal ADA Improvement Grant and agreed to prioritize small, fast-install items because of a constrained grant timeline.
Erin Dorr, Facilities Department project manager, said the grant cycle opens in May with a June deadline and requires project completion by the following June, so the town should avoid complex construction and target equipment and small‑scale improvements that can be purchased and installed quickly.
Suggested projects included amplification lanyards for town meeting rooms, waterproof wheelchairs for Springsbrook Park, accessible picnic tables for schools and town spaces, high‑contrast stair treads for Town Hall, replacement of dangerous flooring at the Town Center, and upgraded ADA‑compliant signage. Commissioners also flagged a proposed $30,000 overhaul of the library website to meet digital accessibility standards and COA requests to fix a steep curb ramp slope and add a second door opener to accommodate wider wheelchairs.
Separately, the Commission proposed piloting tablets or laptops to provide real‑time closed captioning for Annual Town Meeting attendees with hearing impairments who prefer to be physically present in the high school auditorium; the Commission will pilot the idea at the March ATM and work with town staff on an outreach flyer that lists current accommodations and solicits feedback on attendance barriers.
Commissioners assigned follow‑up work to town staff to scope projects for the MOD application and to develop outreach materials for the ATM pilot.
