County committee recommends denials for most tax‑adjustment requests; one approved due to IS error

County Controller Scott Parke summarized eight citizen applications for tax relief that the county’s new Tax Advisory Committee reviewed for procedural compliance with notification rules. The committee’s role was to verify whether the County followed statutory notice procedures, not to adjudicate hardship.

Controller Parke said the committee recommended denying five applications because statutory notices were properly issued and taxpayers failed to update addresses or rely improperly on title companies. He said application six was recommended for approval because an internal IS system bug failed to calculate penalties correctly across the February 1 rollover date, which resulted in a title company receiving an incorrect payoff amount. Matt Brady, identified during the discussion as County Treasurer, reported he is working with Information Systems to correct the bug.

Items seven and eight were resolved without Commission action: the Treasurer exercised previously granted discretion to address a bank error and a lost check. Commissioners Crofts, Stevenson and Kamalu agreed to follow the committee’s recommendations; Controller Parke said the reviewed applications will be presented next week under Consent Items for formal processing.

Controller Parke also requested permission to present routine tax registers as consent items during Board of Equalization meetings using a prepared script; the Commission approved that procedural change.
