The Village of Ada Tree Commission voted to approve its January minutes and spent much of its Feb. 20 meeting planning removal and replacement of 14 pear trees on Main Street. Forester Terry Keiser told the commission that 14 pear trees need to be removed and proposed replacing them with Ivory Silk trees.
Village Administrator Amanda Sears said she prefers a phased approach to the removals and asked Public Works Superintendent Joe Hefner to develop a detailed removal-and-replacement plan, including proposed timing and replacement locations, to present at the commission’s March meeting. Keiser said Ohio Northern University (ONU) expects to place a tree order soon, and the commission agreed to place its order at the same time.
Commissioners discussed the logistics of coordinating the spring planting, collecting locations and species to be presented at the next meeting, and applying for the Hardin County Foundation grant to cover specimen-tree maintenance. Sears said the commission will complete the grant paperwork and that the quote’s specimen trees will be covered "on the quote," indicating the commission plans to include those trees in the grant application.
The commission did not adopt a formal removal schedule at the Feb. 20 meeting. Instead, it directed Hefner to return with a plan that addresses phasing, replacements and any necessary contractor or equipment needs. The next Tree Commission meeting will consider Hefner’s plan and the commission’s tree order alongside ONU’s order.
The meeting also included other routine agenda items such as equipment and training updates, insect-control concerns and a resident complaint about a trimmed specimen tree; those items will be covered in separate commission discussions.
