Township board member warns council that township reserves may be used to fund fire territory projects

Jim Murphy, a member of the Brown Township Board, used the Jan. 8 Town of Brownsburg meeting’s public comment period to warn that his township board plans to reallocate roughly half of the township’s cash reserves — which he said total about $1,000,000 — to support the fire territory.
Murphy said the transfer would fund a 1,200‑square‑foot addition at Station 131 to provide a physical fitness area for firefighters and would place roughly $250,000 into a township budget line for fire equipment. He provided an itemized list of planned work and estimated costs, including a Station 131 exterior door for $17,500; a front porch for $76,000; a Station 131 roof replacement for $170,000; station cameras for $24,500; and other repairs and gear‑room work.
“I'm upset,” Murphy said, urging citizens of the town and township to be aware and to vote; he also said he has filed to run for township trustee. The council chair thanked him and moved on; no formal council action on the matter was taken at the meeting.
David Wyant, another resident who spoke, suggested Murphy email the council to provide a fuller account and asked whether Lincoln Township will make a similar donation and whether the town would match funds among participating units. The council did not resolve those questions at the meeting.
