Resident urges Burbank SD 111 to restore CTE programming and expand child-directed play during public comment

During the public comment portion of the Aug. 27 meeting, resident Donna Kriegseis questioned why some programs and business connections have lapsed and urged the board to restore and expand career and technical education (CTE) access and student-centered free play.
"CTE must be available to all students," Kriegseis said, and she urged the district to re-establish business partnerships and career-readiness opportunities. She told trustees the district once ranked highly for programs such as the NASA Ham Radio program and said, "now the kids can't do math," framed as her concern about declining hands-on opportunities.
Kriegseis also urged the board to provide supervised unstructured child-directed play for students in kindergarten through 5th grade at a minimum of three days per week, and referenced board policy 6:40 in arguing that career and experiential opportunities should be available to all students. The board did not take action in response to her requests during the meeting; the remarks were recorded as public comment for the board's consideration.
Separately, employee Dr. Shwkar Abousweilem requested to speak to the board in closed session; the board later recessed to closed session for personnel matters and reconvened without public action taken on the request.
