Burbank SD 111 previews FY2026 budget, schedules Sept. 29 public hearing; official cites meal debt down to about $35,000

Assistant Superintendent for Business & Finance Dr. Ana Ochoa presented a PowerPoint overview of the district's proposed FY2026 budget at the Burbank School District No. 111 board meeting on Aug. 27, 2025, and said the budget must be placed on public display for 30 days before adoption.
"The budget must be on public display for 30 days prior to adoption," Dr. Ochoa told the board and attendees, and the district set a public hearing and special board meeting for Monday, Sept. 29 at 6:00 p.m. for final consideration. The presentation reviewed fund balances, revenues, expenditures and state Public Acts affecting the budget.
On unpaid student meal balances, Dr. Ochoa said collections have declined from about $150,000 to about $35,000 and asked the board to consider charging off the remaining balances as further collection efforts become impractical. The board did not take action on charging off balances at the meeting; Dr. Ochoa presented it as a request for board consideration.
Dr. Ochoa also gave a brief update on the FY2025 audit, reporting the process is on track for board approval in October, and asked the board to approve the second quarter investment report. She closed the business report by highlighting summer work by finance staff preparing for the new school year.
What happens next: the tentative FY2026 budget must remain on public display for 30 days; the board will take public comment and may adopt the budget at the special meeting set for Sept. 29.
