Summary
County emergency manager Delaney Richmond and local forestry and fire officials presented a condensed Jackson County Community Wildfire Protection Plan designed to be clearer and easier to use; presenters said the plan must be approved by the County, local fire chiefs and the Oregon Department of Forestry and that a regional approach may aid funding opportunities.
Delaney Richmond, Jackson County Emergency Manager, presented the updated Jackson County Community Wildfire Protection Plan (JC CWPP) to the Board on March 3, saying the document has been significantly condensed to improve clarity and usability.
Richmond said the revised JC CWPP remains aligned with planning, suppression, fuels work and land management priorities and described the approval path: the plan must be approved by the County, local fire chiefs and the Oregon Department of Forestry prior to adoption. Dan Quinones, District Forester with the Oregon Department of Forestry, told the Board that a version of a CWPP has existed for 20 years and that the plan has historically helped align suppression and preparedness activities.
County Administrator Danny Jordan provided background on the earlier regional plan that Jackson County had combined with Josephine County and said that regional cooperation had been considered because it could qualify for additional funding opportunities beyond a standalone county plan. Commissioners expressed appreciation for the shorter format, noting the updated plan captures necessary priorities in a more readable package.
The briefing was informational; no formal vote or adoption occurred at the session. The Board thanked Richmond, Quinones and Chief Mike Hussey for the update.
