Rhode Island Senate proclaims March 8 as International Women’s Day and designates March as Women’s History Month

The Rhode Island Senate adopted a resolution recognizing March 8, 2026, as International Women’s Day and designating March as Women’s History Month.

Senator Erso, who introduced the resolution, praised the state’s recent “menopause in the workplace” law and said the enactment drew national and international attention. “We started a movement in this country with a law that…will change women’s lives,” Erso said, pointing to coverage and follow-on proposals in other states. After brief remarks, Erso moved to pass the resolution; the presiding officer put the question and the chamber adopted the measure by voice vote.

The resolution text, read into the record by the clerk, recites the history and global significance of International Women’s Day, notes the 2026 themes for women’s empowerment and sustainability, and directs the secretary of state to transmit a certified copy of the resolution to the governor. The measure is ceremonial and does not create a statutory obligation.

Although several speakers emphasized policy progress—citing the state’s 2024 workplace menopause protections and subsequent interest from other jurisdictions—no legislative action on those topics occurred in this session; the resolution itself is a formal recognition of the observance and theme.

The senate moved on to other ceremonial business after adopting the resolution.
