Raeford council approves adding eight Axon cloud-based body cameras to police fleet

Raeford City Council unanimously approved adding eight Axon cloud-based body camera systems to complete the city police fleet.
Assistant Chief Ray Crumpler told the council that five patrol cars already have Axon body cameras and the department needs eight more to equip its remaining vehicles. He said the department’s server capacity is filling up and the existing contract is set to expire in February. City Manager Dennis Baxley noted Axon offered to add the additional cameras to the city’s lease and defer billing until August 2026, which would move payment into the next fiscal year. Councilman Rick Sandy moved to approve the addition; Councilwoman Jackie McLean seconded the motion and it passed unanimously.
The action authorizes the department to complete the current fleet rollout and integrates the additional units into the existing cloud-based contract rather than creating eight separate contracts immediately.
