North Port approves purchase of nonbuildable North Yorkshire Street parcel to secure right-of-way access

The North Port City Commission unanimously adopted Resolution 2026-R-13 on March 24, authorizing purchase of parcels identified along North Yorkshire Street to secure right-of-way access for drainage infrastructure and ongoing maintenance.
City Manager Fletcher told the commission the parcel was listed and valued at $52,160, but "following negotiations, the seller has agreed to sell the property to us for $6,000." Fletcher added that the owner agreed to convey the property in exchange for satisfaction of delinquent taxes and payment of $5,000, which the owner accepts as full consideration for the transfer.
During questions, Commissioner Petro asked how much of the back taxes the city would pay. The commission was told the delinquent taxes on the parcel are estimated at $1,000. The mayor closed the public hearing and announced the motion to adopt the resolution as "made by the vice mayor, seconded by Commissioner Stokes," and the commission approved the resolution 5-0.
The resolution directs staff to complete necessary filings and acquire the parcels to provide access to drainage rights of way; the commission recorded the negotiated reduced sale price and satisfaction of delinquent taxes as the basis for transfer. No public speakers addressed the item during the hearing.
