During the public‑comment period on March 5, multiple classified employees and union representatives addressed the board regarding compensation, staffing assignments and working conditions.
Speakers who identified themselves as paraprofessionals, librarians and negotiation‑team members described taking on expanded responsibilities (including 1:1 special‑education support and program coordination) without appropriate reclassification or compensation. Gina Perino and other speakers said an involuntary transfer assigned additional duties beyond an employee’s classification and that initial attempts to resolve the issue through HR were unsuccessful; she said the matter has proceeded to the grievance process.
Eva Moreno, CSEA chapter secretary and member of the negotiations team, called for a livable wage and urged the board to prioritize classified employees who keep campuses running. Noel Meisterwan, a longtime district employee, urged benchmarking classified wages against neighboring districts and addressing inequities between hourly and monthly classified pay scales.
Board members acknowledged the comments, thanked speakers for coming forward, and noted ongoing negotiations; no immediate board action was taken at the meeting. Trustees said they would continue to receive negotiation updates and that staff would provide information through the bargaining process.
