Resident proposes pickleball courts in River Heights; estimates $90,000–$120,000

A River Heights resident told the Planning Commission Feb. 10 he has been discussing possible pickleball courts with Mayor Wright and asked the commission to consider likely locations.
Randy Thunell outlined possible sites including the new Stewart Hill Park, a parcel next to the existing tennis courts, across the street from the courts, the Lundahl pasture or an area behind houses on 700 South; he said he favored locating courts north of the tennis courts. He said installation would likely take between one and three years.
Thunell provided rough cost estimates, saying three courts would cost about $90,000 and four courts about $120,000. Commissioner Noel Cooley told Thunell the Planning Commission’s authority was limited to rezoning questions and suggested Thunell work with Councilmember (and parks oversight) Milbank; Thunell said he planned to address the City Council the following week. Thunell also suggested planning for sound barriers for courts sited near homes.
The commission took the comment under advisement; no action was taken at the meeting.
