Orange Beach fire department earns CAS accreditation; grant to fund Lucas CPR device for surf rescue

The Orange Beach Fire Department announced July 1 that it has achieved Commission on Accreditation of Ambulance Services (CAS) accreditation for its ambulance transport operations.
'We started the process probably a year ago,' said Jeff Smith of the fire department, who credited staff including Division Chief Jeremy White and HR staff for preparing for the site visit. He said the accreditation involved staff interviews, 911 reviews and evaluations of receiving facilities.
Smith also told the council the department received a Firehouse Subs Foundation grant 'a little over $18,000' to purchase a Lucas device for the Surf Rescue Division. He described the device as an automatic chest-compression system that provides continuous, correctly timed compressions during resuscitation and can improve out-of-hospital resuscitation outcomes.
The council acknowledged the accreditation and grant with brief praise. The department said it will deploy the Lucas device to beach operations to support drowning and cardiac-arrest responses.
