Sunbury Police Chief Travis Bremigen announced Dec. 8 that he will retire effective Feb. 5, 2026, and the City Council voted to accept his retirement at the meeting.
In a statement to the council, the chief reviewed his 25 years in law enforcement (23 with the local department), thanked the council and staff for support, and described department investments made during his tenure including upgraded equipment and increased training. "I would absolutely like to stay on part time, just to finish some of the things ... and to help out," he said when asked about post‑retirement plans.
The presiding officer moved to accept the retirement and noted that the chief had expressed interest in transitioning to part‑time status; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote. The council asked the city administrator (or designated staff) to post the vetting process for the next chief in accordance with third‑class city law so members and the public can follow the selection steps.
Public commenters praised the chief during the public comment period, telling him he "always answer[ed] the call" at all hours and offering good wishes. Council members said they appreciated his service and emphasized a smooth transition; staff will outline a hiring timetable and vetting schedule in the coming weeks.
