CAPE Committee reviews 2023–24 curriculum work, sets instructional priorities for 2024–25

Dr. Anna Mahon reported to the CAPE Committee of the Brookfield School District on June 12, 2024, that the district completed a series of curriculum, assessment and program initiatives during the 2023–24 school year.
Mahon said the district implemented a formal professional learning series for instructional coaching and administrative teams and advanced science-of-reading work, including Right to Read grant activities and exploration/adoption of a new K–3 reading program. The district also rolled out a new math curricular tool for grades 4–8 and implemented interim assessment blocks (IAB) with coaching for grades 3–8 and grade 11. Mahon said the district reframed its curriculum writing and revision processes, established quarterly administrative curriculum-development meetings and is working on a curriculum writing/revision template.
Mahon reported that the district revised growth and support plans for teachers and administrators to align with CSDE guidelines and pursued district-wide accreditation alignment with NEASC, specifically focusing on Standard 2: Student Learning. The committee also discussed professional development programs, including PDEC offerings and a PD Pathways program intended to strengthen vertical articulation and alignment across grades.
Committee members reviewed Instructional Coaching 2023–24 survey results from teachers; the meeting record notes the results were presented and discussed but does not list item-level findings. The committee identified DESSA cohort pre/post data from 2023–24 for further review to inform social-emotional learning supports.
Looking ahead to 2024–25, the committee heard instructional-focus feedback from BOE members calling for attention to world language programming at the K–8 level; the committee discussed prioritizing that area as part of CAPE goals and objectives.
