Facilities committee tours WMS and flags storage, boiler, portables and roof needs

The Brookfield School District Facilities Committee conducted a walking tour of WMS on June 5, 2024, and identified several maintenance and capital priorities that district staff said require follow-up before work can proceed.
Dan Caldwell, Facilities Supervisor, told the committee that storage for P.E. equipment has been insufficient and that he is investigating converting part of the hallway outside the gymnasium into a storage closet; he said he will contact the Town building department to determine whether that option is feasible. During the tour the committee also inspected the boiler room and noted a boiler that is planned for replacement, though no procurement timeline was provided in the meeting notes.
Caldwell said the portable classrooms near the back parking lot are planned to be demolished as part of the CLES building project and that the cleared area will be converted to ball fields; the committee record stated there is no update on when that demolition is expected to occur. The group observed many broken seats in the seminar room; Caldwell said metal sections have failed from age and wear, and that he has not been able to find a vendor willing to repair those sections. The minutes note that a full renovation of the seminar room is included in year 2 of the district’s 10‑year capital plan.
Members also viewed a section of roof that is scheduled for replacement in the 2024–25 capital budget. Caldwell and Kasey Diotte, Director of Business and Operations, are scheduled to meet next week with Julian Capadose to review bid specifications for that roof work and the library roof project at Brookfield High School.
No formal motions or votes were recorded at the meeting. Committee members reviewed SchoolDude maintenance reports with no questions and moved on to other agenda items. The meeting was adjourned at 6:49 p.m.
