Brewster County renews burn ban, approves mutual aid and emergency vehicle purchase

Brewster County Commissioners on March 10 renewed a countywide burn ban, authorized a mutual aid agreement to coordinate fire response with the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo and neighboring counties, and approved purchase of a 2026 Ford F-250 for the Emergency Management Department.
Emergency Management Coordinator James Etchinson presented the department report and recommended extending the county burn ban from March 13, 2026, through July 1, 2026. Commissioner Ruben Ortega moved to renew the burn ban; Commissioner Sara Allen Colado seconded and the court approved the renewal 4-0.
Separately, the court approved a Mutual Aid Agreement with the Ysleta del Sur Pueblo, Jeff Davis County and Presidio County to facilitate assistance for fires and emergency response. Commissioner Ortega moved to approve the agreement; Commissioner Colado seconded and the motion passed 4-0.
Judge Greg P. Henington said Enterprise located a 2026 Ford F-250 for Emergency Management. The court authorized purchase of the vehicle at the quoted price and approved up to an additional $10,000 for required equipment, with LATCF identified as the funding source. Commissioner Ortega moved to approve the purchase and the equipment allowance; Commissioner Colado seconded and the vote was 4-0.
The actions are administrative and intended to maintain public safety and mutual-response capacity for the county. No additional staffing changes or new permanent appropriations were recorded in the meeting minutes for these items.
