Brewster County approves historic roof repairs, tourism contracts and $50,000 toward Alpine animal crematorium

Judge Greg P. Henington presented quotes for roof replacement projects for the Marathon Jail and the Brewster County Courthouse and said the costs would be covered from the county's Historical Preservation Fund. Commissioner Ruben Ortega moved to approve both roof proposals and Commissioner Sara Allen Colado seconded; the motion passed 4-0.
The court also approved several tourism marketing contracts presented by Robert Alvarez, executive director of Visit Big Bend. Contracts approved included a two-page spread with an advertorial and digital component in Unplug Magazine; a full-page Texas Monthly summer travel issue ad; an OTT TV campaign by Ibex Consulting targeted to the East Coast; a sponsorship for Blues on the Green (Austin); Texas Highways digital content for 2026; and a CBS Austin March Madness streaming package (Gold Package, $10,000). Judge Henington moved to approve the listed contracts; Commissioner Colado seconded and the court voted 4-0 to authorize the contracts.
On a related expenditure, the court approved a $50,000 county contribution to the City of Alpine to support purchase of a new animal crematorium. Judge Henington and Councilman Rick Stephens said the City is soliciting bids; Brewster County identified LATCF as a funding source and noted the payment is contingent on a final interlocal agreement between the City of Alpine and Brewster County regarding stray-animal services. Commissioner Ruben Ortega moved to approve the contribution; Commissioner Colado seconded and the motion passed 4-0.
The court approved a renewed lease for Post Park in Marathon with Susan Combs, et al., and declared several county items (various windows and wooden swinging doors and fencing) as salvage eligible for auction, each on unanimous votes. The court scheduled its next regular meeting for March 24, 2026, at 9:30 a.m.
The approvals are routine authorizations for county facilities maintenance, tourism marketing, and intergovernmental cooperation; no litigation, zoning changes, or further appropriations were approved for these items at the March 10 meeting.
