Gunnison City Council approves campground permit, rezoning and routine items; hears staff reports

The Gunnison City Council on March 4 approved a conditional use permit to allow a short-term RV campground at 395 S. Main and adopted Ordinance 2026-01 to rezone 11.36 acres from Agriculture (A-1) to Rural Residential (RR).
Janet Hanson-Haight, who represents the Janet Joye Hanson Revocable Trust and owns the Paradise Motel at 395 S. Main, asked the council to allow at least nine RV spaces connected to city utilities to help accommodate visitors to upcoming bicycle events. The Planning Commission recommended approval. Councilor Kim Pickett moved to approve the conditional use permit; Councilor Donald Childs seconded. Roll call votes (Nielson, Pickett, Peterson, Childs, Hill) were all yes and the motion carried.
Bruce Christenson requested the rezoning of 11.36 acres near the city's east limits so Austin and Madee Clark could build a home; the Planning Commission also recommended approval. Councilor Brian Nielson moved to adopt Ordinance 2026-01; Councilor Rohn Peterson seconded. Roll call votes were unanimous and the ordinance was adopted.
On procedural business, the council approved the minutes from the Feb. 18 regular meeting on a motion by Councilor Kim Pickett, seconded by Councilor Donald Childs, and approved bills for the period ending Feb. 26 totaling $65,673.61 on a motion by Councilor Childs, seconded by Councilor Stella Hill; both votes were unanimous.
The meeting record shows the council also voted to enter closed and executive sessions later in the agenda; they returned at 8:02 P.M. and adjourned on a unanimous roll call vote.
The decisions on the campground and the rezoning advance local land-use approvals tied to tourism and housing; both items were forwarded to the council with positive recommendations from the Planning Commission and passed by unanimous roll call votes.
