The Milan City Council on Feb. 4 discussed options for supporting Milan Seniors Healthy Living (MSHL) after the organization’s contract with the city expired.
Mayor Ed Kolar said MSHL’s programs "support all the seniors in this zip code area, including citizens that do not pay into the senior milage tax," and said the council should explore different support mechanisms, including models used to fund the Milan Area Fire Department. The discussion began after the council unanimously approved an amendment to the meeting agenda to add the item for discussion.
Mayor Pro-Tem Wayne offered context on past agreements with MSHL, describing historical arrangements and her familiarity with the program. "I’ve gained respect for the Milan seniors by attending their meetings — ‘Coffee with the Mayor’ once a month — and I want to do what’s right by all," she said.
Councilmembers thanked Mayor Kolar and Pro-Tem Wayne for raising the matter. Councilmember Kerkes said she looks forward to finding a plan that is "good for everyone," but the council did not vote on or direct staff to take a specific action during the meeting.
The council’s next regular meeting is scheduled for Feb. 18, 2025; council members indicated they will continue to consider options and potential funding approaches before any formal proposal or ordinance is introduced.
