Commission authorizes MDOT reconstruction agreement for Apple Avenue; open house scheduled

The Muskegon City Commission approved a local agency agreement with the Michigan Department of Transportation for reconstruction of Apple Avenue from Webster Avenue to Home Street.
Dan Vanderheide, the city’s director of public works, said MDOT will lead design and construction but the agreement obligates the city to pay for specific portions of the project. He said those city costs match numbers presented previously and will be paid from a mix of road, sewer and water funds depending on the work item. Vanderheide said the project could begin in roughly a month and is expected to take about a year to complete.
Commissioners noted the expected disruption and asked how residents can learn more; Vanderheide said the city will host an open house on Feb. 18 from 4 to 6 p.m. at the DPW facility (1350 East Keating) and that MDOT plans a separate, more detailed public meeting focusing on driveway and traffic impacts. The commission adopted the resolution authorizing the DPW director and city clerk to sign the contract and certified the motion by roll call.
Vanderheide emphasized the long-term nature of reconstruction work and said staff will provide ongoing updates to residents about timelines and traffic impacts as the schedule and staging are finalized.
