Oscoda County treasurer reports tax-foreclosure litigation pause; final rulings expected this summer

Treasurer William Kendall updated the Oscoda County Board of Commissioners during the public-comment portion of the March 10 meeting on the status of ongoing tax-foreclosure litigation following a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling.
Kendall said legal counsel currently is viewed as having acted in the county's interest and that a drafted settlement agreement has been halted pending further legal developments. He told the board that a final ruling on related lawsuits is anticipated in June or July 2026.
The treasurer said the county is maintaining a conservative fiscal approach: a specific pool of funds has been established and set aside to cover potential settlement costs should they become necessary. Kendall characterized some current payout demands in litigation as seeking fair-market-value payouts that he considered unrealistic.
The board received the update; no formal action or settlement was approved at the March 10 meeting.
