Portage council adopts amendment to cemetery code after brief presentation

The Portage City Council voted unanimously Feb. 10 to adopt an amendment to Chapter 18 of the city's code of ordinances governing cemeteries.
City Manager Pat McGinnis told the council the amendment had been introduced at a previous meeting and was intended to "clean up some things" in the cemetery ordinance. "We just found some opportunities to clean things up a little bit and present you with a better ordinance," McGinnis said.
Following the presentation, Council member Miller moved to adopt the amendment and a second was recorded. Roll call produced unanimous "yes" votes from council members present, and the mayor declared the ordinance adopted.
Why it matters: McGinnis said the city’s cemetery rules had not been updated since the early 1980s and that a different department now oversees cemeteries; the amendment is intended to modernize language and administrative details.
Next steps: City staff and the clerk will incorporate the amendment into the municipal code and notify relevant parties, as required by ordinance update procedures.
