Tamarac to rezone Shaker Village site for Eastside community park under grant conditions

Tamarac officials told the commission on Jan. 12 that the city will seek a land-use amendment and rezoning to turn the recently acquired Shaker Village site into an Eastside community park.
At the meeting preview, Maxine said the steps in items 7A and 7B are tied to a Florida Communities Trust grant that financed the acquisition and that the grant requires the property be designated for recreation. "Item 7A does the land-use amendment, changing the land use to recreation, and 7B is the zoning change," she said.
The city will also bring a related rezoning (item 7C) for an overflow parking lot at Caporella Park to facilitate construction associated with the park project. Maxine said all three rezonings are quasi-judicial and that a fuller presentation will occur at the formal meeting on Wednesday.
Why it matters: the rezoning is a condition of grant compliance from the Florida Communities Trust; the city must submit the land-use change by the end of the month to remain in compliance, city staff said. If approved, the designation will commit the site to recreational use and clear a key procedural hurdle for park development.
What happens next: the commission will hear formal presentations and consider the ordinances during the regular Jan. 14 meeting. No formal votes were recorded during the Jan. 12 preview.
