Summary
On final reading the council passed a temporary juvenile curfew amendment that limits successive mayoral curfew extensions so no extension exceeds 30 days and sets the temporary measure to expire April 15, 2026.
The D.C. Council on Dec. 2 gave final approval to bill 26-460, a temporary amendment to the juvenile curfew law that limits the mayor’s authority to extend curfews.
Council member Pinto described two minor edits that clarify the mayor cannot extend juvenile curfews indefinitely through successive orders and that any single extension cannot exceed 30 days; she also added an expiration date for the temporary legislation of April 15, 2026. "It clarifies the language around the mayor's authority to extend juvenile curfews and ensures that the mayor can't do so indefinitely through successive orders," Pinto said during debate.
Council members debated the measure briefly and approved the amendment by unanimous voice vote; the bill as amended passed on final reading unanimously in the meeting’s session. Members said the April deadline gives the council time to assess mayoral budget proposals and council investments in youth programming before deciding on any further extensions.
A member later asked to be recorded as a no on reconsideration; the council reconsidered and recorded three no votes in the final tally but the bill remained adopted as amended.
